Does a Masternode run forever?

i _thought_ that would be the case after proper setup, but a couple of hours ago 3 of my Masternodes (which were according to the log running fine) were listed as inactive.

I had to restart them from their cold wallets.

Is this normal?

It was happend to me too but before RC5.
Make autorestart saw TS wrote it in one post how to do it.

"listed as inactive" - you mean on chaeplin's or elbereth's sites? Problem with their scripts most likely, if your MN's report :1 you needn't have worried, I've had MNs paid while they were completely greyed out at chaeplin's page.
 
Interesting, I'm having the same issue with mine. After I start my masternode on my local, cold wallet, if I shut it down the remote wallet is listed as "inactive" shortly after and not listed with masternodelist
