New Reddit header?

I proposed a more informational Reddit header if anyone is interested.

I would be happy to take suggestions as well.

Heres the full sized one:

Version without clutter:

edit: since I'm already facing flack and "corporate identity" issues I just thought I'd pick apart our current one because its the only constructive way I know how to go about proving people wrong without getting irritated with them:

Our Current banner:
current.png

Q: Why does this need to be changed you ask?
A:
Because it is the first thing quite a few people will be seeing as they explore the crypto ecosystem trying to find the best investment. Our current header is useless, it has no information on Dash, not even a simple graphic helping me understand what Dash is. Not a single thing. I see some vague outline of the world, and that is even a useless image in terms of what Dash really is.

We need something that catches their attention in UNDER 10 seconds. When I see a soda machine, a mobile wallet, and a founder who's got his own art drawn after him, I get curious. I see the first header, I get nothing.

End story. Corporate Identity is useless when its got no identity to show off. So please don't give me that answer again. I want the communities opinion, not a single person making this decision. This is a decentralized project, treat it like one please.

Here is my opinion, take it for what it's worth.
  • Like all your stuff, it looks professional and clean.
  • I really like the "Instant. Secure. Private" under the logo - it says very quickly the value proposition of Dash.
  • I like the soda machine as well - gives a real-world example of Dash, and looks cool, too. I do worry that perhaps someone would think Dash is limited to only such applications, however. The soda machine is awesome, but only the tip of the iceberg.
  • I think the right side makes it too busy. With a header like this, you want to leave out some info - leave people intrigued and asking for more. And although Evan is obviously essential to where Dash is today, I'm afraid that putting him on the header makes the project look like a cult of personality.
Again, just my thoughts.

Appreciate the constructive criticism!

I do agree, the imagery could be improved and maybe less busy overall, just my first idea though.

Maybe I'll try a version without Evan and the community logos... Just the IX wallet.

edit: here is that version

All social media banners are in the corporate identity, we have a certain style and we gotta stick to it across all pages !
your suggestion is more like a ‘sales banner’ and i do not really see ‘us’ in there, this shows what we have and can do (a bit desperate)
this information comes from postings, not from banners !
(no offence, hope you understand)
check any other Crypto Social Media page, everybody is using banners with graphics, nobody is using "Sales Banners"
i am not saying we should do what everybody else is doing
but
is Deutsche Bank putting their ATM machines on a banner
is etherium putting smart contracts on their banner
....
banners are like a Logo, they project the company (incl all the fuzz behind a logo and color, from Secure, stable, .....)
no need to throw everything else on there, makes you look too desperate
(just my 2 Duffs)

huh fair point, i could see clutter could loose focus but maybe not the word desperate? i am definitely not in marketing...

And if we go to twitter which is the same type of platform:
http://blog.hubspot.com/marketing/twitter-header-image-examples

What do we see as a common theme in all of these?

The header stands alone without the need for any sort of logo, and you still know where you are/ what content to expect...

With our header, you understand nothing, if anything it creates more questions.
This is not putting our best foot forward. I have done marketing for quite a while now, and the main goal is to create LESS question by supplying the answer( or in this case; a general idea) before they think of a question.

edit: Only AFTER our logo is plastered across the entire planet can we lean on it, it means nothing right now because its not a household name. And besides, the dash logo doesn't exactly scream "hey i'm a digital currency" anyways. The rest can stand on their logo (like Bitcoin) because Bitcoin is a word and a logo and has a "meaning" that everyone can make assumptions about.

Meaning: We need supporting imagery. We can't just plaster our boring logo up there and call it "corporate branding" and be done with it. Thats just laziness. Double Edit: And whoever is giving you these "marketing tips" needs to be vetted. Whoever designed our "corporate branding" needs to have some competition, because its quite honestly lacking.

in marketing and design you have a certain style, or you do not

i would not compare us to the 49ers and the likes as that is a totally different industry, approach + style
i can give you 5 samples of clear / clean graphic headers too, but i think you have seen them enough out there

reg "boring logo" and "corporate branding"
it is what it is for now ! we went through a rebranding (before your time i think) and now we have to stick to this
as a ton of people out there still see us as Darkcoin and not Dash yet
we went finally from 'dark' (dark blue) to light (white + the likes)
things like that have to be changes slowly over time, as you do not wanna confuse and alienate your community and followers
(it might not be the best logo and appealing to everybody, but that is what we have in the moment)

"Thats just laziness"
it is easy to sit on the sidelines and drop these kind of comments, as you are obviously new to the community i take no offence, but trust me there is a lot of work done in this areas ! you have to remember that changing 1 , means changing all, "corporate Branding" and that incl wallets, webpage, Apps ,....
(as we just went though that 12 month ago, changed it in-between , we have to stick to the plan)

"We need supporting imagery"
i disagree
people land on our pages because we are who we are and have a product that stands by itself ! nobody is cruising reddit or FB checking on cool /picture like / informative banners ..... banners are supporting, nothing else , they do not sell the product

UdjinM6 fernando eduffield Raptor73 camosoul Solarminer acidburn flare fulltimegeek InTheWoods TanteStefana Proteus babygiraffe dcamb MangledBlue TaoOfSatoshi Anyone? Not even sure who to tag at this point.

I don't even know why I bother arguing sometimes, anyone else have an opinion because I dont intend on defending my logic when its obvious the argument is not about whats better or the right way to do it, its more like no one wants to do it.

Our current header for Reddit is useless, it tells a new user nothing. We can either change it or keep growing in spite of it, either way I am correct.

If we don't hold ourselves to a higher standard, we are doing ourselves a disservice.

If anything we need to figure out how to make the header responsive to smaller devices because right now it doesnt. Can you imagine the header you proposed on a mobile device? If responsive it's way to small and defeats the purpose. With the current header when people visit on smaller devices at least they see the dash logo and to the right, some white, so it almost looks like it belongs.

You do great work. It's easy to add additional images to side bar just talk to tungfa. Which, while we're on the topic I'll say this about him. He works hard at coordinating all the social media pages. He's done a pretty damn good job at it if you ask me. The guy has DASH on minds... yeah minds, anyone heard of that?

I'm sure he could use the help managing some of the pages. From my experience working with him we were most efficient when I followed his lead.

Actually, its perfectly responsive, not all screen sizes need the entire image. I checked this as I do responsive web design for a living.

Great point though! Good thing I have it covered! ;]

I've built my fair share of responsive websites. Still have a few clients myself. Anyways here's what your image looks like on my phone right now (see image below).

If it's the entire banner you can't read the words on the right. Do you have a way to show partial images on certain devices for reddit? The css styles sheets for reddit pages are pretty nuts. You might get a copy of the dash css and create your own reddit page. Add your new banner then we can see it in live.

You could make all kinds of changes and propose it to the official reddit. It's easy to create a sub reddit and best to get acquainted with the reddit stylesheets anyways. Currently I do that stuff for tungfa but if your abilities out weigh mine perhaps you could take over.

Way ahead of you, working on reddit.com/r/DashSeattle using https://www.reddit.com/r/naut

And as far as the css goes:

background-image:url("reddit-header.png");
background-position:top left;

Should do the job, no?

And thanks but no thanks, getting this feeling tungfa has something against me.

what are you doing ?
you did not have enough drama the last day ?
looking for more ?

there is more to it than 1 guy asking for a change !
personal opinions, styles, ideas,...

this has nothing to do with 'i like you' or 'i do not'
(how old are we 12 ?)

i made my point about images on banners above

I just keep getting blown off.

But hey its cool, I'm no quitter.

I made my point as well, which obviously is wrong compared to yours by the way you make it sound. Not trying to create drama, I just call it how I see it. I could honestly care less if anyone liked me, i just want to do me and be helpful and teach people abut crypto and make a few improvements here and there.

But I see the team is too busy for these types of things, i'll just keep proposing them until the day one of you is bored enough to want to look these over again. Or until the team add/changes members, at which point I will have a list waiting of such things.

My suggestion was to take the dashpay css and manipulate that.

Your banner on naut is responsive but it still shows the whole banner. If we used your proposed banner and it showed the whole thing you wouldn't be able to read the words on the right.

Do you argue with your clients when the provide feedback?

Is everything an argument to you?

Are you willing to put in the next two years of your life getting treated like dung shit not getting paid for it? Then after those two years still get treated like dung shit by people who haven't even been around the block once?

Drop your ego. As I said in my pm. You could do great things for dash just earn your place instead of walking all over toes.

Hmm. Not sure how to respond to this one.

Your banner on naut is responsive but it still shows the whole banner. If we used your proposed banner and it showed the whole thing you wouldn't be able to read the words on the right. -> There are options available for different headers. I've done my homework, but thank you for your input.

Do you argue with your clients when the provide feedback? -> I provide my opinion, and still listen to the client. If I didn't provide them with an opinion, i'd be a pretty half assed designer honestly.

Is everything an argument to you? -> I guess? I mean people keep trying to argue with me, so of course I respond, is that wrong?

Drop your ego. As I said in my pm. You could do great things for dash just earn your place instead of walking all over toes.
-> no need to get personal sir, I already apologized for coming off as a dick, but now I'm not so sure I should have even said that.

That's why I suggested you take the css from dashpay reddit and add your banner. No reason to get defensive. If you did your homework show me, its bether tHan tEllington me. It's as easy as pasting the code I sent you into your reddit page and putting your fix in.

No just every post you make seems to be an argument of some kind. Seems like it's counter productive to your efforts here. Just an observation of mine.

Nothing personal. Juse a piece of unsolicited advice for you. I've been where you are so do what you will with it. Also no need for an apology. I won't provide any advice as your seem to have it all figured out anyways. Good luck sir.

Alright well I obviously need a break from this hornets nest for a few days I guess. Point taken.
