Can I run the same Dash Core wallet on both laptop and desktop?

I have another basic question no doubt, i want to know i can run my core wallet on two different devices? Just bought a desk top can i have the core wallet on both laptop and desktop? If the answer is yes do i only need the dashcore backup.Dat to do so?

That might be not that simple question as it looks at first sight actually. It's very important to understand that wallet is actually a key chain i.e. it holds no coins but rather it holds keys to unlock these coins on blockchain. So you can have these keys on many different devices however from the very same point you start using the same backup different wallets will start to generate new keys for you. After few hundreds txes you could end up with a situation where different wallets keep completely different keys. That could be confusing because you might thought it should be otherwise and was not creating backups for all of them i.e. one day you might not be able to restore some of your funds. That's the reason why such use cases are highly unrecommended. Instead, generate completely new wallet on every new device and send some portion of funds from old wallet to a new one. This way you don't give yourself a chance to be confused by "the same" wallet on different device - you know that your funds are separated and every wallet should be backed up independently.

Excellent explanation on the wallet holding keys that provide access to the coins on the blockchain, changed my perception on wallets. So whats the purpose of the core wallet back up.Dat? Is it for the instance that your device gets lost, stolen or broken, you can retrieve those funds only? Then you would have to create a new core wallet or would it replace the funds and the original core wallet?

I'm not sure I get the question completely... wallet.dat file holds some info about your private and public keys and transactions. The most important info is private keys of course, everything else can be recreated from them. So the main purpose of wallet.dat is to save your keys. And like any keys they can be used by anyone who has access to them i.e. you can use the same wallet.dat (or its backup) on any machine in the world to unlock the very same funds on blockchain - install Dash Core, put wallet.dat in data folder and there you have it.

I run the same wallets + MN's on multi devices

I have my wallet.dat (s) on USB drives (double encrypted)
plug that into laptop / desktop and boom

"on the same device" ?
so you quite your QT, save the wallet.dat to USB (as in guide)
used it on separate computer, .... started 'other' wallet (with that wallet.dat)

is it fully synced ?

yes this is all on my mac book pro, after i completed taking the wallet.dat file and encrypted it. i have allowed the same dash core wallet to sync on the same device and there is no transaction history or balance i doesn't even have a password once the wallet syncs.

I wanted to put the wallet on my new Imac, i have checked node40 and all my 5 masternodes are still running I'm guessing that is a good sign, are you available to skype me to work through this pls

all sorted !
everything back on track

ok that guide 100% works, but it seems people get confused with their own back ups !

any suggestions what/how/... we can change the guide to make that clearer or simpler please let me know
;)
