So I was looking at the general difficulty curve here, and was wondering how did the network spike so high on that day? All the way to 10k, must have meant some sort of huge whale behind it for a while, or was this just a glitch in the network?

Nice. I've always wondered what would happen, and if there were 'safeguards' in case many miners left a network with a long difficulty retarget. Would they implement a TTL where it automatically readjusts if it's taken 1.3x longer for example. This seems to fix the problem nicely. I guess...
